November 7, 2023 (New Paltz, NY) – The Town of New Paltz has a reason to celebrate as they proudly introduce their latest acquisition: the Bobcat TL69 telehandler. However, what truly sets this news apart is the innovative vision of the town. With this cutting-edge equipment in their arsenal, they’re poised to embark on a transformative journey, redefining the possibilities for their community. The community is set to commence a remarkable story about how this machine is the first piece of equipment that will shape a brighter and more efficient future for the residents of the Town of New Paltz.

The New Paltz Recycling & ReUse Center, situated at 3 Clearwater Road, is taking a bold step towards sustainability. They are spearheading a robust composting program that aims to upcycle asphalt, brush, debris, and food waste into valuable reusable products like fill, mulch, and nutrient-rich soil. To kickstart this eco-friendly initiative, the Center made a pivotal investment in the form of the Bobcat Telehandler. This versatile machine empowers the dedicated staff to efficiently turn and separate materials, paving the way for a greener and more environmentally conscious future. It’s a significant move towards reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency at the heart of New Paltz.

“The Bobcat’s versatility and its maneuverability have been a great benefit,” said Mike York, Waste Reduction Specialist at the Recycling Center. “It suites all the different facets of the jobs that we have to do here. It’s the right size to do as many different jobs as we can. We have leaves and brush coming in from the town anyways, as well as food scraps, and this allows us to flip it quickly and easily and turn it into compost. We create mulch and soil product that the community comes in and purchases and they love it.”

The Bobcat TL619 telescopic telehandler is the ultimate tool for users seeking unparalleled flexibility in the 6,000-pound size category. This machine is a game-changer, allowing users to effortlessly reach, stack, backfill, and push with precision and unmatched performance. With a robust 74-horsepower Bobcat turbocharged engine under the hood, the TL619 guarantees powerful, high-torque performance, efficiency, and user-friendly serviceability. This telehandler was purchased through Summit Bobcat in Walden, with partial funding courtesy of a generous grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

As we get the composting facility up and running, we’ll be taking in more commercial food waste,” said Town of New Paltz Supervisor Neil Bettez. “Under Ulster County law, the larger generators like restaurants and places like that have to compost, so they need facilities where they can bring it. We’re thrilled to be providing a service to them as well. That’s the future plan.”

Presently, the Town enthusiastically receives vegetable and fruit scraps from its residents, yet it envisions a bolder future. The Town stands on the brink of securing a pivotal grant that will facilitate the establishment of an all-encompassing composting program. This visionary initiative will extend its scope to encompass all compostable products, propelling the community forward in its pursuit of sustainability and heightened environmental responsibility. The end product of the town’s composting efforts is now accessible to town residents for purchase.

The Town plans to submit the grant proposal for the second phase by the end of the year, with the hopes of opening in 2024.

Town of New Paltz In 2011, the Town of New Paltz was offered the opportunity to partner with EPA as one of thirteen municipalities nationally to represent EPA Region II in a zero-waste initiative. New Paltz has a zero-waste action plan which was adopted by both Village and Town boards leading the way to achieve its zero waste goals.  As a zero-waste community, it strongly encourages waste reduction, diversion and recycling.
